Look After Your Mental Health

It’s been a funny old year so far. We’ve been thrown many different curve balls and there’s still quite a few months of 2020 left! It is so important to look after your mental wellbeing during all of this. As business owners we deal with a lot of stress in our daily lives usually but we must give ourselves time to unwind and de-stress. Here are some of the ways you can approach that.

Take Time Off Work

Sometimes just taking a break from the routine of work helps you unwind and refocus your mind. I know it’s hard to remove yourself from the day job, especially if you’re self-employed and there is no one else to do your job if you don’t do it. However, running yourself into the ground won’t help. You are far better to take a break when you start to feel stressed out, than continue along the same path and find yourself in a situation that is harder to come back from. Whether it’s an hour, a day or a weekend, take some time off work.

Connect With People

We’ve all been severely lacking in contact with people. Human connection is something we all need in our lives and something that makes us feel better and stronger. Talking to other people brings us out of our heads and helps us to perhaps rationalise our thoughts and feelings. Our emotions are valid, they are important, but when you don’t connect with others they can be overwhelming.

Find Ways To Relax

Do you make time to relax? There are many different ways to relax and they can help you in different ways. From yoga to watching your favourite film, these can relax you and help you destress. Giving our minds something else to focus on is part of relaxation. It’s not always the relaxation of the body that is important. Some people find the best way to relax their mind is by pounding the pavements and going for a run. Exercise is good for your mental wellbeing.

Sleep Is Important

Everyone knows that sleep is important for keeping a clear head. Mental rest is paramount if you are suffering. Don’t stay up late doing work. Get yourself an early night and rest your mind. It is often difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep during the summer months because of the longer hours of light. Consider investing in a blackout blind or special curtains to give you a completely dark room to rest and recover in.

Be Part Of Something

In times of isolation and feeling like you are ‘inside your head’ it’s easy to keep yourself to yourself. When you start to feel part of something though, things improve. How can you help others at this time? Can you volunteer for a cause? Do you have skills to offer to other people who are perhaps suffering in a different way? When we unite and work together we feel part of something much bigger. This can not only take our mind off our own internal issues but help boost our mental wellbeing as we feel part of something much bigger.
