A little known HMRC rule means that you may not have to pay tax you've underpaid

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/family/2010/09/tax-chaos-qa-how-to-avoid-paying--

In a nutshell, if HMRC notify you more than 12 months after the end of a tax year that you are liable to tax for that year, you may not have to pay it back as long as two conditions are fulfilled:
1) You had submitted all relevant information to HMRC e.g. change of job
2) You had no reason to think that your tax affairs weren't in order

HMRC have confirmed that they will honour correct claims made under ESC A19 as the rule is known but they are not publicising it!
